Melbourne City are preparing to play Melbourne Victory on reputation and not form in Saturday night's blockbuster A-League derby.

City head into the match on a three-game winning streak, and Victory on an unprecedented three-game goalless losing run, but coach John van 't Schip has issued a stern reminder of the champions' prowess.

"The last three games we've played them, we didn't win," he said.

"They're the champions, they're the team that won every game the last year and that doesn't disappear and that didn't disappear overnight."

Van 't Schip said he was yet to choose between Aaron Hughes, Jacob Melling and Jack Clisby to fill a vacancy at centre-back after Connor Chapman's injury.
